Breast enhancement or enlargement is a surgical procedure
to increase the size of the breast by placing implants behind
the breast tissue. There are a number of reasons why this
is done. These can be cosmetic considerations or medical e.g.
correct breast asymmetry and breast reconstruction.
What can this procedure achieve?
You must have realistic expectations. A pleasing realistic
result can lead to a feeling of enhanced self confidence.
The size achieved should be in proportion to your figure.
What are the alternatives?
New procedure of enlarging breasts with your own fat is
under intense investigation and we expect this to be available
sometime by the end of 2008. We will only be providing this
service once full investigations are published, and protocols
for this procedure are established.
What happens before surgery?
You will have a detailed consultation with one of our consultant
plastic surgeons, who will discuss your desires regarding
the shape and size you want to achieve. You will have the
opportunity to see the full range of implant sizes and shapes
available at our clinic, and decide on the size you want
to achieve.
A common misconception is to relate a bra “Cup Size”
to the size of the implants. Your consultant plastic surgeon
will help you to an appropriate size of implant to achieve
the size of breast you want.
Procedure:
The procedure involves an incision in the crease below
the breast to place the implant either behind the breast
tissue or behind the chest wall muscle this will be discussed
with you at your consultation. The incision is closed with
dissolving stitches after the implant is inserted.
Recovery:
After the surgery, you will stay in the hospital until
fully recovered from surgery. This usually means an over
night stay. Most women are fully recovered and back to work
after 2 weeks, however some may take up to four weeks.
After Care:
You will always have access to the hospital after your
surgery (day or night) where advice can be given over the
phone or a doctor will see you should the need arise.
You will be seen at our clinic for follow up care after
the surgery. You will then have the option of having the
implants checked on a yearly visit at our clinic.
The implants we use come with a life time guarantee for
capsule formation and rupture.
Risks and Complications:
All surgery carries risks and there is no substitute for
a full and frank discussion with your consultant plastic
surgeon
